Eventually, a patient with FSGS can expect to wake up one day with swollen ankles. This is an indication that the patient's kidneys have failed (renal failure) and now must undergo dialysis. Depending on the type of dialysis, patients can expect dialysis treatments to be done 4 hours a day three times a week. An important fact to consider is that 65,000 Americans die each year because there is not a sufficient supply of kidneys.
There are several drug choices available to prolong the life of a patient with FSGS. However, these drugs can take a toll on the health of the patient. Symptoms can include: Nausea, blurry vision, headaches, stomach cramps, gas, acid reflux, irritation of the stomach lining, weight loss, lack of appetite, osteoporosis, memory loss, high blood pressure, itchy skin, hormone imbalances, and in the long term heart disease claims the lives of some FSGS patients.
FSGS patients can also expect to deal with insurance premiums or lack of insurance which means eventual asset depletion and dependence on Social Security to survive.
There are many financial mistakes that can cause patients to lose everything they have worked their entire lives for as well.
Dear FSGS patients:
I have a personal interest in establishing this foundation because my brother and I were both diagnosed with FSGS in 2002.
I left a career as a Financial Advisor due to my treatments for FSGS. The income I made as a stockbroker, Insurance broker, and Real Estate broker was not enough when the treatments for FSGS made me sicker than some cancer patients get when undergoing chemo therapy.
This foundation can help patients that are members get involved with other FSGS patients in California that have already dealt with the issues described above.
Hopefully, I can help others avoid the mistakes that can arise when fighting a terminal illness like FSGS.
Sincerely,
Cory Bruce Langberg
